What are Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B are two distinct viral infections that affect the liver.
-
Hepatitis A: Transmitted via the faecal-oral route through contaminated food, water, or poor sanitation. It causes severe flu-like illness, abdominal pain, and jaundice.
-
Hepatitis B: Transmitted through contact with infected blood and bodily fluids, including unprotected sexual contact, unsterilised medical or dental procedures, tattooing/piercing, or accidental needle-stick injuries. Chronic infection can lead to liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.
At Livewell Clinic Pharmacy, we offer the private Combined Hepatitis A and B Vaccination Service (Twinrix Adult®) at our Soho, London clinic to provide convenient dual-protection in a single course.
Why Choose the Combined Hepatitis A & B Vaccine?
Rather than receiving separate vaccination courses, the combined jab streamlines your immunisation against both viruses:
-
Dual Protection: Immunises against both Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B simultaneously.
-
Fewer Injections: Consolidates two separate vaccine courses into one convenient schedule.
-
Long-Term Immunity: Provides protection for up to 25 years against Hepatitis A and around 5 years (or longer) for Hepatitis B once the full course is completed.
-
Essential for High-Risk Travel & Work: Ideal for travellers visiting endemic regions, long-term expatriates, healthcare workers, aid personnel, and individuals with occupational or lifestyle exposure risks.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Who should consider the combined Hepatitis A & B vaccine?
The combined vaccine is strongly advised for:
-
Travellers visiting countries across Africa, Asia, Central/South America, Eastern Europe, or the Middle East where both viruses are present.
-
Backpackers, independent travellers, long-term tourists, or those visiting friends and relatives (VFR travel).
-
Healthcare, dental, laboratory, or emergency response workers.
-
Humanitarian aid workers or volunteers.
-
Individuals travelling abroad for medical or dental procedures.
How far in advance of travel should I book?
Ideally, you should start your standard course at least 5 weeks before travelling to receive your first two doses. If travelling at short notice, the accelerated schedule allows you to receive 3 doses over 21 days before departure.
Who should NOT receive the vaccine?
You should avoid or postpone the combined vaccine if you:
-
Have had a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, or combined Hepatitis A & B vaccine, or any of their ingredients.
-
Are currently unwell with an acute severe febrile illness on the day of your appointment.
What are the common side effects?
The vaccine is very safe and well tolerated. Mild, temporary side effects usually clear within 1 to 2 days:
-
Soreness, redness, or mild swelling at the injection site
-
Mild headache, tiredness, or malaise
-
Mild digestive upset or low-grade fever
Can I get this vaccine alongside other travel jabs?
Yes. Twinrix Adult® can safely be administered at the same visit alongside other routine travel vaccines, such as Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Rabies, or Tetanus using separate injection sites.
